Patient journey Pain rehab

self perceived.png

Anneke Beetsma,PhD candidate at the Healthy Aging, Allied Health Care and Nursing Lectorate of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) would like to have the figure on the left visualized and explained in a more understandable drawing.

It was a challenging puzzle. It mainly required a substantive understanding of the figure. But fortunately with the help of Anneke and her team we came up with a beautiful visualization.

The figure represents the path of a successful rehabilitation process from the perspective of people with persistent pain. Pain rehabilitation is often developed top-down by clinicians and researchers. This project investigated the meaningful learning experiences of rehabilitation patients who have made significant improvements in dealing with persistent pain.

The 7 themes developed provide a new conceptual understanding of how pain rehabilitation could promote recovery. The themes strongly support: Personalized care, Pain dialogue and personal growth, from the perspective of the recovering patient. The supported therapeutic relationship is considered a crucial factor for improvement.
